Sunscreen, Melanin, and Black Skin: The Questions Science Still Needs to Answer

For decades, the public has heard one simple message:


"Everyone should wear sunscreen every day."


But what if that message deserves more nuance?


As conversations around skin of color continue to evolve, one question remains surprisingly underexplored:


Were our public health recommendations developed with melanin-rich populations in mind?


The Vitamin D Contradiction


Melanin naturally reduces the penetration of UVB radiation into the skin.


This biological adaptation protects against sunburn and DNA damage, but it also reduces the skin's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight.


Research consistently shows that Black Americans experience disproportionately high rates of vitamin D deficiency compared with White Americans.


If darker skin requires more UVB exposure to synthesize equivalent amounts of vitamin D, should identical sun-avoidance recommendations apply equally to every skin type?


That question deserves investigation.


Melanoma Risk Is Not Equal


According to the American Cancer Society and the American Academy of Dermatology, melanoma occurs far more frequently in White Americans than in Black Americans.


Non-Hispanic White Americans develop melanoma at dramatically higher rates than non-Hispanic Black Americans.


Meanwhile, the most common melanoma subtype seen in Black patients—acral lentiginous melanoma—often appears on the palms, soles of the feet, and beneath the nails, areas that receive little direct sun exposure.


If the biology differs, should the messaging differ as well?


A Different Public Health Conversation


The lower incidence of melanoma in Black populations does not eliminate the importance of skin awareness.


However, it raises an important question:


Has public education focused so heavily on sun avoidance that it has overshadowed conversations about vitamin D deficiency, outdoor recreation, and Black-specific health needs?


Could a more individualized approach better serve different populations?


Colorism and Sun Avoidance


Colorism has influenced beauty standards for centuries.


Many Black women grew up hearing that getting darker was undesirable.


In contrast, bronzed skin is often celebrated within White beauty culture.


Could these beauty standards influence time spent outdoors?


Could social attitudes toward skin tone influence vitamin D status?


These questions deserve rigorous sociological and public health research.


Sunscreen Research


Modern sunscreen products have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing sunburn and UV-induced skin damage in many studies.


However, much of the historical research underlying public sunscreen recommendations was conducted in populations at higher risk for UV-induced skin cancers.


Future research should examine whether optimal sun guidance differs for people with varying levels of melanin and varying vitamin D requirements.


Body Oils and Photoprotection


Traditional oils such as coconut oil, carrot seed oil, red raspberry seed oil, and vitamin E oil are often discussed online as having natural SPF properties.


Some laboratory studies have suggested UV-absorbing characteristics for certain plant oils.


However, there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to conclude that these oils provide consistent, reliable protection equivalent to regulated sunscreen formulations under real-world conditions.


That does not mean they are ineffective.


It means more research is needed.


Questions Researchers Should Study


- Should vitamin D recommendations differ according to skin pigmentation?

- Do Black communities require different public health messaging regarding sunlight?

- Does colorism contribute to sun avoidance and vitamin D deficiency?

- How do outdoor lifestyles influence Black mental health and maternal health?

- What is the optimal amount of sunlight exposure for melanin-rich populations?

- Should dermatology guidelines be more individualized by skin type?

- How should physicians discuss sun exposure with Black patients in a way that balances vitamin D needs and skin health?


The Browning


The Browning does not argue against science.


It argues for more science.


It asks whether Black communities have been adequately represented in dermatologic research, vitamin D research, and public health messaging.


Rather than assuming that one recommendation fits every population equally, The Browning invites physicians, researchers, historians, and communities to ask better questions.


Because asking better questions is often how better science begins.
